Due to the fact that he is recovering from groin surgery, New England Patriots cornerback Jason McCourty has been allowed at Gillette Stadium. With the coronavirus pandemic, most NFL facilities are still shut down. However, players who are rehabbing from injuries are allowed inside the Gillette confines.
He was asked if he felt it was weird reporting to an empty stadium.
“At this point, no,” He said on a videoconference call. “I guess, what constitutes as weird has dramatically changed throughout the last few months. We’ve been in it so long that this has become rather normal to us at this point.”
He added: “We’re going to go through the same fears that a lot of other people in our country are going to go through. You’re going to have to figure it out the best way. When they tell us to come back to work, we have to as individuals make sure, ‘Hey, to my standard, I feel that this is safe enough. I’m ready to commit to it. I’m ready to do it.’ If not, you’ve got to go about whatever you feel is best for your family.”
As a result, McCourty has been able to stay in shape. In his press conference on Wednesday, McCourty was very clear that only players who were rehabbing were allowed into the facility. He also made it clear that they were following all health protocols.
In the meantime, there have been reports that NFL coaches could return to facilities next week. Minicamps could resume on June 15 at the earliest, and June 27 at the latest.
Right now, it appears that McCourty is just trying to stay in shape and get ready for the upcoming season. He certainly figures to be a huge part of the defensive equation for 2020.
Entering his third season, McCourty has become a staple of the New England defense. With New England’s schedule being the hardest in football, the secondary will certainly be tested multiple times. McCourty figures to be a huge part of the defensive equation.
