Jarrett Allen’s qualifying offer after 2020-21 just got more expensive

Joe Tsai will have to open up his wallet again after this season if the Brooklyn Nets want to keep Jarrett Allen.

The Brooklyn Nets paid up for Joe Harris in the offseason, signing the sharpshooter to a four-year, $75 million deal. Harris is shooting 51.5% from deep on 5.7 attempts per game to open 2020-21 — and Steve Nash likes his defense, too — so suffice it to say Joe Tsai is seeing a nice return on his investment.

Maybe that’ll help Tsai when he has to pay up again in the offseason — assuming he, Nash and general manager Sean Marks want to hold onto Jarrett Allen. According to ESPN‘s Bobby Marks, Allen has now “reached the starter criteria” in his contract, which he did by averaging “34 starts over the 2019-20 and 2020-21” seasons.

With that being the case, Allen’s qualifying offer after this season will jump to $7.7 million from $5.7 million. More importantly, this is just another indicator of how well Allen has played this year — and another reason he should explore restricted free agency to secure himself a long-term deal and a big payday.
