The Jacksonville Jaguars will return from their much-needed bye week in hopes of crawling out of a 1-6 hole. To do that, they must start with the Houston Texans Sunday, who share the same record and will be traveling to Jacksonville.

These two teams met just last month and it didn’t end up going well for the Jags, who lost the game by a score of 30-14 and gave the Texans their only win of the season. While revenge could be on their minds, it could be harder to acquire this time around as the Jags will be starting sixth-round rookie Jake Luton.

Here is how the Jags Wire crew is feeling about the Cardiac Cat’s chances this week as Luton attempts to start his NFL career with a bang:

It seems like deja vu all over again as the Jags will have to start a sixth-round rookie at quarterback this season. Instead of it being Gardner Minshew, though, its going to be Jake Luton getting the nod.

If the Oregon State product could garner a win in his first-ever start, he’d already accomplish a feat against them that Minshew hasn’t: defeating the Texans. Sadly, I don’t see that happening (even with the Texans’ linebacker situation) with the Jags’ defense allowing points at an alarming rate.

In other words, it’s hard to see Luton putting up 30 points and going toe-to-toe with the Texans’ offense.

Phil Smith (@PhiltheFilipino): Texans 27, Jaguars 17

With Minshew Mania seemingly on the downside, and now out with an injury, the Jags will try to get lightning to strike twice with Jake Luton. The offense finally seemed to rely on its rookie star, James Robinson, Week 7 and it really paid off. However, the problem of course will continue to be the defense. Brandin Cooks and David Johnson tore into the defense last time around and there isn’t really a reason to believe the Texans’ offense won’t have another solid outing. Ultimately, I see the Texans getting their second victory against the Jags, keeping them on pace to land one of the draft’s top quarterbacks.

Daniel Griffis (@DanDGriffis): Texans 27, Jaguars 16

It’s the end of an era and the dawn of a new as sixth-round rookie Jake Luton makes his NFL debut against the struggling 1-6 Houston Texans. The Jaguars have gone from bad to worse and will enter the game lacking the ability to rush the passer in addition to putting their faith in a late-round rookie quarterback. With that being the case, I don’t see a scenario where Luton out duels Deshaun Watson.

Robert Ricks (@rrickswriting): Texans 29, Jaguars 17

The bye week won’t do the Jags much good as they will face off against a quarterback in Deshaun Watson who just has their number. I would’ve been tough even with Gardner Minshew II, but with rookie Jake Luton in his very first NFL start, it might be too much.

Jacob DeLawrence (@_Jdela): Texans 31, Jaguars 17

The Jags are coming off a much needed bye week and are at home facing their rivals in the Houston Texans. Both have looked abysmal at times, however, I think the Jags’ defense will do what it’s done all season (with an exemption of Week 1) and allow over 30 points.

Will Frost (@willfrost_): Texans 31, Jaguars 9

The Jaguars are coming off their bye week with a 1-6 record despite having a hugely favorable schedule to open 2020. The good news for the Jags is that their Week 9 opponents are the Texans who also are a one-win team. The bad news is that the Texans’ lone win was against — you guessed it — the Jaguars.

Without starting quarterback Gardner Minshew II and very little hope, the Jaguars look ready to be swept by a team with no head coach.
