Jags land Jerry Jeudy, Kenneth Murray in first-round of Mel Kiper 4.0 mock

The Jags bolstered their receivers corps with selection No. 9 of his new mock, their selections afterward are a little puzzling.

The 2020 NFL Draft is nearly a week away and mock drafts are hitting the web at a fast rate. Amongst the most interesting was a new mock from ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr., which included the first two rounds.

With their first selection, the Jags added another offensive selection in Alabama’s Jerry Jeudy, who some feel is the best receiver in the class.

9. Jacksonville Jaguars
Jerry Jeudy, WR, Alabama

If the Jaguars are going all-in on Gardner Minshew, they could get him another weapon here. And Jeudy, who had 26 career touchdowns at Alabama, would be a great complement to DJ Chark and Dede Westbrook. He is a superb route runner and smooth-hands catcher who is dynamic after the catch. Jacksonville is another team that is likely to keep a close eye on defensive tackles Derrick Brown and Javon Kinlaw.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with this pick, especially for the sake of adding weapons around Gardner Minshew II. They already have a star in D.J. Chark Jr. and adding Jeudy would then present the Jags with the opportunity to move Dede Westbrook to the slot receiver position permanently.

With their next pick, Kiper had the Jags addressing the defensive side of the ball as they selected Oklahoma linebacker, Kenneth Murray.

20. Jacksonville Jaguars (from LAR)
Kenneth Murray, LB, Oklahoma

This pick has been hard to gauge for the past few months. The Jaguars have several needs, including off-ball linebacker, defensive line, wide receiver, tight end, cornerback and right tackle. So if I’m giving them a wideout at No. 9, it makes sense to go defense here. Jacksonville brought in middle linebacker Joe Schobert in free agency, but Murray has the versatility to play any linebacker spot. He’s a tremendous athlete and tackling machine.

Before free agency, this selection made all the sense in the world, however, they added inside linebacker Joe Schobert for a very hefty price. That will kick Myles Jack to the weak-side position where he could be a Pro Bowl-caliber talent. That just leaves the possibility for the Jags to put Murray at strong-side linebacker. However, in the Jags’ defense, the strong-side linebacker position doesn’t see a significant amount of snaps, and the position definitely isn’t used enough to spend a first-round selection on.

In Round 2 the Jags continued to bolster their defense.

42. Jacksonville Jaguars
Justin Madubuike, DT, Texas A&M

I thought about defensive tackle for the Jaguars’ two first-round picks, but this would be a great draft for them if they can get Madubuike here. After Derrick Brown and Javon Kinlaw, Madubuike is the defensive tackle with the most pass-rushing upside — he had 34 pressures and 18 tackles for loss last season. Taven Bryan, a first-round pick in 2018, hasn’t worked out, so Jacksonville needs to push him with another young DT.

If the Jags go with a defensive tackle, it probably needs to be a player with the ability to play nose tackle and be a space-eater, which is basically the role Marcell Dareus played for the most part. That said, Justin Madubuike’s pass-rushing skills would be nice but not nice enough to pass up one of the Jags’ other pressing needs. They, in all probability, will count on Taven Bryan and Rodney Gunter to push the pocket from the middle this season, so maybe the Jags would like to address cornerback or their offensive line with this pick next week.
