Jack Nicklaus never thought about going anywhere but Ohio State

Jack Nicklaus was always going to go to college, and that college was always going to be Ohio State. He is a Buckeye through and through.

It’s no secret that Jack Nicklaus is a huge Ohio State fan. Being from the Columbus area and going to school at OSU certainly has something to do with it, but he wears the scarlet and gray colors on his sleeve well.

When speaking at an event to recognize collegiate golfers, Nicklaus was asked whether he ever considered skipping college. For the Golden Bear, the answer was simply, and in fact, there was only one place that he was ever going to go (subscription may be required).

“I was recruited by a lot of schools and offered scholarships,” he said. “I told them, don’t bother. I was going to go to Ohio State because I wanted to go to Ohio State. I hadn’t missed an Ohio State football game since I was 6 years old. I wasn’t about to miss one.”
And while the temptation was there then and even more so now, Nicklaus said he learned some life lessons just from being in college.
“College is what you want to make it,” he said. “I think that the growth you get from being around people and disciplines and learning how to budget your time and so forth is so valuable. College more teaches you how to learn, not what you learn.”

Nicklaus was great in the PGA, and it all started as an amateur in college. He was so good, he carried Ohio State to a Big Ten title in golf in 1961, winning the Big Ten individual championship by 23 strokes. His efforts led to a one-shot victory for his team.
That’s about as dominant as what Ohio State football has been against Michigan recently.
