Jac Caglianone breaks Florida single-season home run record

He’s done it! Jac Caglianone has broken the record for home runs in a season at the University of Florida. How many will he finish with?

There’s a new name at the top of the single-season home run record books at the University of Florida.

[autotag]Jac Caglianone[/autotag] hit his 27th home run of 2023 on Saturday against the Texas A&M Aggies in the top of the fifth. Chris Cortez was pitching.

Unfortunately, the record-setting homer came in the middle of one of Florida’s worst losses of the season.

“It is disappointing that it came in a game like today because it kind of gets overshadowed by the outcome of the game,” head coach Kevin O’Sullivan said. “Jac’s had a great year for us and to break that record is a tremendous accomplishment for him. We are very happy for him. It’s just unfortunate it came in a game like today.”

The previous record of 26 home runs stood for 18 years. Matt LaPorta did it in 2005 and Wyatt Langford tied it last year. With seven games left in the regular season, Caglianone is on pace for 30 homers this year and has a chance to break the BBCOR-era record of 32 set by Texas catcher Ivan Melendez in 2022.

Caglianone should set several records at Florida by the end of the season. He entered the top 10 in total bases (166) and should threaten the RBI record. His current .848 slugging percentage would also be a program record.

Florida has one more game against Texas A&M on Sunday and finishes the season with series against Vanderbilt and Kentucky.
