Alabama quarterback Mac Jones had some big shoes to fill as the Crimson Tide starter for the 2020 season after 2018 Heisman finalist Tua Tagovailoa declared for the NFL draft. Jones put on the shoes and they are looking a bit smll on him.
Jones is having an amazing season fueled by younger and fewer receivers than Tagovailoa had, and breaking numerous school records.
So far on the season, Jones has completed 78.5% of his passes for 2,196 yards, 16 touchdowns and only two interceptions.
What the stats won’t show is his ability to make game-deciding plays, manage the offense and rally the team.
Todd McShay on ESPN’s ‘Get Up,’ today discussed the possibility of Jones being a first round selection in the upcoming 2021 NFL draft. This would be the first time the Crimson Tide produced back-to-back first round quarterback talents.
McShay does not hide the fact that this season is similar to that of Joe Burrow’s at LSu in 2019. A name that wasn’t high on many draft boards and did not enter the season with high expectations, but blew everyone away. however, the ending of the story may not go the same. While Burrow worked his way up to be drafted No. 1 overall, Jones would be entering a draft class loaded with talent, such as Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields, Trey lance and more.
Regrdless of where draft boards have him, Jones still has the option to return to play one more season of college football.
Mac Jones is moving up @McShay13's draft board very quickly đź‘€
"Mac Jones is coming in and he's pulling a Joe Burrow. I'm not saying he's going to be No. 1 overall, there's no chance. … But he's gone from off the radar to … he's been on fire this year!" pic.twitter.com/bClFUa8VJq
