The New York Giants are heading into the 2020 NFL season with a brand new coaching staff, a ton of new and exciting faces, a refreshed attitude and a confidence that their losing ways are behind them.
In searching for a core in which general manager Dave Gettleman can build upon, it isn’t very difficult. His selections over his first three drafts should tell you everything you need to know.
Running back Saquon Barkley, offensive linemen Will Hernandez and Andrew Thomas and defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence are all considered building blocks.
But most importantly, quarterback Daniel Jones is the player that will define this franchise’s comeback. The second year player out of Duke, who showed flashes of being special as a rookie last year, is expected to be a large part of the centerpiece of the Giants for years to come.
Gary Davenport of Bleacher Report listed each team’s “most promising building block entering 2020” and adroitly named Jones the Giants’ top candidate.
“It didn’t take Daniel Jones long to capture the imagination of fans in New York. In his first extensive game action, Jones threw for 336 yards and two scores (and ran for two more) in a comeback win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers,” writes Davenport. “Just like that, “Danny Dimes” was born.”
Davenport points to the work that new Giants offensive coordinator Jason Garrett did with Dak Prescott in Dallas and that if Jones takes that path, will become a top performer.
Last year, in his fourth season with the Cowboys, Prescott had developed into one of the NFL’s most prolific passers, throwing for 4,902 yards.
