Iowa QB Cade McNamara named to Maxwell Award Watch List

Cade McNamara is among those on the Maxwell Award Watch List, an award given out annually to college football’s most outstanding player.

As the countdown clock for the 2023 college football season ticks closer each day, more and more news is coming out and Cade McNamara appears to be finding himself shed in positive light.

The Iowa Hawkeyes‘ new quarterback is among those named to the Maxwell Award Watch List ahead of the 2023 season. The award is presented annually to the most outstanding player in college football.

McNamara joins Iowa this year as a transfer from the Michigan Wolverines and is looking to ignite an Iowa offense that desperately needs some sparks to help light up the scoreboard a bit more.

During the 2021 season when he was Michigan’s starter, McNamara completed 64.2% of his passes for 2,576 yards and 15 touchdowns. He led the Wolverines to their first Big Ten championship since 2004.

In addition to McNamara’s Maxwell Watch List inclusion, there are a flurry of fellow Big Ten members that appear on the watch list as well. Those include Isaiah Williams from Illinois, Taulia Tagovailoa from Maryland, J.J. McCarthy and Blake Corum from Michigan, Marvin Harrison Jr. and Emeka Egbuka from Ohio State, Nicholas Singleton from Penn State, Hudson Card from Purdue, and Tanner Mordecai and Braelon Allen of Wisconsin.

Some of the previous winners of the Maxwell Award had very prestigious college careers. A few of those recent winners include LSU’s Joe Burrow in 2019, Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa in 2019, Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield in 2017, and Louisville’s Lamar Jackson in 2016.

As Iowa looks to kick off its season on September 2 at home against Utah State, Cade McNamara is going to be an integral part of this offense. His production this year is highly anticipated and he appears to be welcoming the expectations.
