Instant analysis: Saints defeat Washington 33-22

What an ugly day.

The New Orleans Saints defeated the Washington Football Team, 33-22, in Week 5 action from FedEx Field. The Saints improve to 3-2 on the season, while Washington drops to 2-3.

From start to finish, this was the most disappointing game of the season for Washington. The defense continues to get beaten by the big play, including a ridiculous hail mary at the end of the first half.

Things felt good early for Washington when defensive end Chase Young picked up his first sack of the season, forcing a fumble in the process. Yet, Washington’s offense struggled to make the Saints pay. The Saints turned the ball over twice in the first half and committed multiple penalties to aid Washington, yet Washington failed to take advantage.

Quarterback Taylor Heinicke had his worst NFL game, completing 20 of 41 passes for 248 yards and two interceptions. His two interceptions were bad, forced throws and cost his team points on one, and led to a Saints’ score on another.

His final numbers do not tell the entire story, as Heinicke missed receiver all game. Heinicke’s limitations were on full display, from throwing behind Terry McLaurin to ignoring Dax Milne wide open in the end zone.

New Orleans quarterback Jameis Winston wasn’t spectacular but did throw for four touchdown passes.

Next up for Washington is the Kansas City Chiefs.
