Another week, another Sam Darnold-led offense failing to put points on the board.

Darnold returned for the Jets against the Dolphins following a two-game absence and showcased his inability to lead New York to scoring drives. The Jets mustered only 260 yards of offense and three points, as Miami cruised to a 20-3 win in which it picked Darnold off twice. Ryan Fitzpatrick, meanwhile, looked like anything but a quarterback who hasn’t started a game since Week 6.

New York had its chances to strike. It could’ve gotten points before halftime. It could’ve notched its first touchdown of the game after a Dolphins fumble created excellent starting field position — twice. However, in typical Jets fashion, Gang Green fell flat on its face.

Game Balls

LB Harvey Langi: Langi continued to play well in place of Avery Williamson, registering eight tackles and a fumble recovery.

DT Quinnen Williams: Williams was a disruptive force on New York’s defensive line, recording seven tackles, three quarterback hits, and two pass deflections. He’s on track to appear in his first Pro Bowl at this point.

Quick Thoughts

-Playing for a field goal down 10 at the end of the first half with an 0-10 record? There’s a reason why Adam Gase’s days with the Jets are numbered. That’s the definition of losing coaching. Even though Loggains was calling the plays, that’s a Gase directive.

-Speaking of losing coaching, Loggains dialed up four consecutive screen passes at one point in the third quarter. Real creative playcalling there.

-Darnold didn’t show many signs of rust in the first half but reverted to questionable decision making in the second. He made some good throws, but couldn’t consistently lead the Jets down the field — an issue that has hampered him throughout his tenure as New York’s starting quarterback.

-The Jets had no answer for DeVante Parker throughout the afternoon. Make that two weeks in a row an opponent’s No. 1 wide receiver has thrashed New York’s secondary.

-Although Parker had his way with the Jets’ secondary, New York’s defense played inspired football in the second half. Credit Gregg Williams for getting his players to lock in, even if it was all for naught in the end.

-Denzel Mims has the “it” factor that a Jets wide receiver has not had in a long time. This seems to be a weekly observation at this point, but he is going to be special.

-If there’s one impending free agent the Jets need to re-sign not named Marcus Maye, it’s Breshad Perriman. He’s a legitimate weapon in the passing game — something the Jets are going to desperately need in 2021.

-Ashtyn Davis has been solid filling in for Bradley McDougald, but he showcased where he still needs to grow when Mike Gesicki beat him for a touchdown in the second quarter. Tight ends have taken advantage of the California product at times during his rookie season.

-0-11. Five more games until the tank for Trevor Lawrence is complete.
