Inside The Numbers: How Mike Yurcich’s Offense Could Look in 2020

With new offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich, Longhorns dove into the numbers to see how his offense could look in 2020.

Passing is just one half of the offense, the run game is also expected to have a big impact. The Texas Longhorns have a long history of running backs who make a huge impact from Earl Campbell to Ricky Williams to Cedric Benson and beyond. Bijan Robinson could be next once the takes the job this year or the next. Keaontay Ingram is inline to be the starter come kickoff in 2020. He will be looking to build on a sophomore year that saw him eclipse 1,000 yards of offense and 10 touchdowns.

Team Year Rushing TDs
Oklahoma State 2013 171.6 2.7
Oklahoma State 2014 136.6 1.4
Oklahoma State 2015 126.5 1.8
Oklahoma State 2016 171.0 2.5
Oklahoma State 2017 182.2 2.6
Oklahoma State 2018 190.7 2.3
Texas 2019 177.2 1.9

The rushing game will be a huge factor for Texas’ success for the upcoming season, going back to the 2017 season once again, the Cowboys were able to have a huge impact. Their two-headed attack on the ground could be even more deadly with Ingram, Robinson, Roschon Johnson and Jordan Whittington all in the mix for the Longhorns. The key difference being that Ehlinger is a threat to run as well, setting a career-high with 663 yards on the ground in 2019. Under Yurcich in Stillwater, the Cowboys running game had improved each season in his final four years.

The Longhorns could be more of the Ohio State Buckeyes offense than that of Oklahoma State. This year Ohio State averaged more than 250 yards rushing per game with J.K. Dobbins and Justin Fields leading the way. Dobbins ran for 2,003 yards and 21 touchdowns. Fields added 484 yards on the ground and 10 more touchdowns.

It could be a similar impact from the combination of Ehlinger and the running back group this season. All in all it points to a potential big year for the Texas offense led by Yurcich and a senior quarterback trying to put his stamp on this program as he chases all of Colt McCoy’s school records.
