In school and playing UNO, Daveyon Lydner pulls in a Rutgers basketball offer

Daveyon Lydner details getting his first Division I offer from Rutgers.

Daveyon Lydner got his first Division I offer in a most unconventional way while playing a game of cards in class. Lydner, an explosive guard from Pennsylvania, was offered by Rutgers basketball on Tuesday.

A 6-foot-3 guard, Lydner is likely to see his recruitment explode in the upcoming months. Last season for William Penn (York, PA), Lydner averaged 17.0 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game as a sophomore.

Rutgers is getting in early on a player who has the potential to be a multi-year starter at the next level.

Lydner wasn’t exactly expecting the offer from Rutgers when the program reached out on Tuesday.

“The offer was a blessing. I found out in my science class playing UNO with my teacher and friends. My AAU coach texted me saying I got my first offer from Rutgers and I was excited when I got the news,” Lydner told Rutgers Wire on Wednesday.

“I feel great about Rutgers. Great school, a great basketball team and they were the first school to offer me and that really meant a lot to me because they believed in me.”

UNO, a popular card, is something that Lydner’s science teacher uses when the class has completed their work for the period.

This is a recruitment that is likely to take off in the summer. He is already a polished and savvy scorer who is explosive in nearly all aspects of his game.

Lydner is beginning to register some interest from Xavier and Ohio State. The Buckeyes, he says, are showing their interest in him although it is still at the early stages.

“They really like me,” Lydner said. “They want to see more though before they offer me.”

He said that the Scarlet Knights and the Buckeyes are similar in terms of what he is initially learning about each program.

“What makes Ohio State stand out for me is their community and the support of their fans,” Lydner said.

“That’s also what stood out about Rutgers too.”

Lydner won the game of UNO. Talk about a full day.
