The New York Giants are still on the hunt for their next general manager, but that search should wrap up at some point next week. When it does, they will shift their attention to finding a new head coach.
One potential option is Brian Flores, who was recently fired by the Miami Dolphins. He reportedly views the Giants as an “attractive fit.”
Although the situation is very fluid and nothing is set in stone, the idea of Flores taking over as Giants head coach is an intriguing one. Not just because of his success in recent years, but because of his apparent desire to land Deshaun Watson as his quarterback.
Even prior to his divorce in Miami, there was speculation that Flores wanted Watson as opposed to Tua Tagovailoa after their relationship had soured. Now, it appears, those rumors will follow Flores to wherever he goes.
NFL Insider Jordan Schultz has stoked the flames in recent days, suggesting that Flores and Watson are trying to position themselves to land in the same spot. And the Giants are apparently one of Watson’s desired destinations.
On the flip side, Flores – who nearly orchestrated Deshaun’s trade to the #Dolphins – believes his best chance to build a winner is with Watson, even if it means going to a less talented roster. I’m told they often speak daily.

Watson, I’m told, spends part of his off-season in NYC and has established business connections and friendships there as well. All of which he feels, understandably so, will be advantageous while playing for the #Giants.

Ignoring the fact that this would likely be considered tampering, there are other issues that persist. First and foremost is Watson’s ongoing legal situation and the optics trading for him would carry. Giants co-owner John Mara already reportedly regrets how he handled the Josh Brown situation, so he may prefer to avoid Watson all together.
Even if Watson’s legal situation were cleared up, there would still be other obstacles in the way. How much would it cost to pry Watson away from Houston? Could the Giants manage his contract with next to no salary cap space? And how much would they want to gamble on a quarterback who hasn’t played in over a year when so many other personnel issues exist?
At the end of the day, the Giants hiring Flores and then trading for Watson seems like a longshot. It’s a fun exercise, but not something we actually envision playing out.
