The New York Giants are 1-6 to start the 2020 regular season and have compiled a record of 10-29 since Dave Gettleman took over as the team’s general manager, but might his job actually be safe?
During a Friday appearance on WFAN, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport shared some insight that Giants fans may not want to hear.
Not only does Rapoport expect the Giants to exceed four wins this season, he gets the sense that Gettleman will retain his job if the team remains competitive week in and week out.

“I just haven’t gotten the sense that it’s headed [toward a firing],” Rapoport said. “I mean, usually, when you have a young coach who you like and things don’t go well, usually the GM goes first. I just haven’t gotten the sense it’s headed there as of right now with the Giants.
“Now, obviously, there have been some roster moves that you would not agree with that have put them in this position. But if you believe that [Gettleman] was heavily involved in the coaching search and you believe he got the quarterback right, it makes it a much more complicated decision to fire him just because of the record.”
If things do spiral out of control for the Giants over the second half of the season and they lose their competitive edge, Rapoport then believes things could change in regard to Gettleman.
In that scenario, Gettleman may still avoid being fired, instead “retiring” or stepping down in much the same way Tom Coughlin did following the 2015 season.
“If it came down to that — and I think they’re going to do better than four wins because they’ve lost some tough games, but I think down in and down out they’ve played well — I wonder if Gettleman will have a say in his future,” Rapoport said.
“In other words, if it’s not working out, I wonder if it’ll be more of a retirement than a firing.”
What may frustrate fans even further is that young and upcoming executives seem to like what head coach Joe Judge is doing and view New York as a top option and a place they believe they could win.
“I get the same questions you guys have from up-and-coming general manager candidates because that would be a great spot,” Rapoport said when asked if Gettleman would be fired. “I think a lot of people really believe in what Joe Judge is doing, so a lot of young executives around the league [think] that’s a place, ‘we could really win there.'”
There is still a lot of season left, but at least for now, Gettleman’s hot seat appears to be lukewarm at most.
