Hugh Pinkney is making the most of his freshman year

Hugh Pinkney is having a strong season for Rutgers baseball.

When Hugh Pinkney committed to the Scarlet Knights, Rutgers baseball was ecstatic because of his skill set. The Toronto native was one of the top players in Canada. He earned a spot on Canada’s National Team in 2022 U-18 Baseball World Cup and can play multiple positions. During his first season in Piscataway, Pinkney has not disappointed.

Through 138 at-bats, Pinkney is hitting .275 with fifteen runs batted in. The Silverthorn Collegiate Insitute product has shown a little power with nine extra-base hits, including eight doubles. While the Toronto native is still waiting for his first home run, he has not been overwhelmed by the advanced competition.

Additionally, Pinkney has been just as reliable in the field. While splitting time behind the plate and in the infield, he has only committed four errors. His versatility has made it hard for the Scarlet Knights to keep him out of the lineup.

With less than a month left in the regular season, Pinkney has the sixth-highest average on Rutgers and has only missed five games. That endurance has proven to be valuable in his freshman year.

Over the next few weeks, Pinkney will get to build on his success with the Big Ten tournament quickly approaching. He should see plenty of time in the field as the Scarlet Knights look to make a deep playoff run. He has been an on-base machine of late, and that should only continue as he gets more experience.
