When you hear the name Joe Willie Namath, the first thing that comes to mind is that iconic image of him running off the field waving his finger in the air following the New York Jets’ upset of the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III (Unitas was on the Colts at the time but didn’t start the game). Namath never had the gaudy statistics we’ve come to expect from some of the game’s greatest quarterbacks. But, Broadway Joe was larger than life, and his personality made him a star both on and off the field. Namath joined the Los Angeles Rams in 1977 after 12 years in New York. He started just four games before being benched, tossing three touchdowns and five interceptions. He retired at the end of the season.
