How opponents attacked the Cardinals in the passing game in 2019

Breaking down the numbers in 2019.

Without much other news with the Arizona Cardinals happening, we can look back at the 2019 and break down different statistics. Today we look at the way opposing teams attacked their defense in the passing game, using numbers from the NFL Game Stats & Information System.

We know the Cardinals’ pass defense was bad.

They were 31st in passing yards allowed, dead last in passer rating allowed, 31st in touchdown passes allowed, 28th in yards per pass allowed and 30th in completion percentage allowed.

How did opponents attack them?

They threw passes to the short right 205 times, the third-most attempts faced in the league, completed 74.2% of them (30th) and averaged 6.05 yards per play (23rd).

To the short left, opponents attempted 185 passes (7th), completed 77.8% (32nd) and gained 7.55 yards per play (32nd).

In the short middle, they attempted 103 plays (21st), completed 68.0% (12th) and gained 8.44 yards per play (29th).

There were far fewer deep pass plays.

To the deep left, opponents attempted 38 passes (14th), completed 52.6% (32nd) and gained 12.61 yards per play (21st).

In the deep middle, there were 23 attempts (16th). They completed 70% of them (30th) and gained 15.57 yards per play (20th).

Opponents attempted 47 passes to the deep right (11th), completed 40.4% (19th) and allowed 10.7 yards per play (11th).

The passes to the deep right make sense. Patrick Peterson lined up on that side of the field most of the time. Despite his struggles, opponents threw that direction less often and had less success than in other directions.
