The Kansas City Chiefs added depth in the trenches at pick No. 63 in the second round with Oklahoma center Creed Humphrey. On Day 2 of the 2021 NFL draft, the Chiefs added a big guy to bolster the front unit and help protect franchise quarterback, Patrick Mahomes. After Mahomes was harassed in the pocket during Super Bowl LV, adding young talent to the interior was a necessity.

Pass protection is a strength of Humphrey’s game. The left-handed center did not allow a sack during his three-year career at Oklahoma and only 28 total pressures, according to PFF. He is also an outstanding athlete that can move along the line of scrimmage in different run schemes to open up rushing lanes and get upfield. With a productive resume at OU in 37 game starts, he will compete for a starting role with the Chiefs as a pro-ready center.

After the departure of tackles Eric Fisher and Mitchell Schwartz, offensive line acquisitions became a priority to solidify the unit. The team added Orlando Brown Jr. and signed Joe Thuney, Kyle Long, and Austin Blythe during the offseason.

Humphrey will be a nice fit for the Chiefs, coming from an explosive offense at Oklahoma that is similar to Andy Reid’s high-powered offensive attack. His young former quarterback at OU, Spencer Rattler (2020), has been compared to Patrick Mahomes for his arm talent and ability to make off-platform throws. Now, Humphrey will work with Mahomes at the pro level, one of the greatest rising stars in today’s game.
