In little surprise, what NFL.com thinks the Bills have to do to “dethrone” the AFC Champion Chiefs has to do with quarterback Josh Allen.
But they certainly think Allen is not the problem, rather part of the solution.
The outlet lays out essentially helping Allen, or make his “life easier.” Here’s how Buffalo’s dethroning efforts are explained:
The Bills can be encouraged with Allen’s second-year progress without fooling themselves into believing he can carry a franchise with his arm alone. He has a scheme that covers up his weaknesses and accentuates his strengths under underrated play caller Brian Daboll. Now Allen just needs more offensive teammates who can make plays on their own. General manager Brandon Beane did a fantastic job upgrading the talent base last offseason with the additions of wide receivers John Brown and Cole Beasley, running back Devin Singletary and center Mitch Morse. Anything close to a similar haul this year will help Allen lean on his athleticism as a poor man’s Cam Newton, with Sean McDermott’s defense doing the rest.
Beane will certainly do just that this offseason. The Bills need to help Allen, they did so last offseason, and NFL.com neglects to layout the fact that the Bills had four new starters on their offensive line, not just Morse.
But with that in mind, don’t forget. Beane always says he likes to draft the best player available. Free agency comes first. So the Bills front office is going to look to first find solutions there before April’s draft. Or try to.
The Bills also have to think of the future, too. They can’t completely break the bank with players like Jordan Poyer, Dion Dawkins and Matt Milano entering contract years.
Don’t envy Beane, but have faith.
