The 49ers’ depth chart at cornerback is relatively unclear going into their offseason workouts. That’s why South Alabama cornerback Darrell Luter Jr., the No. 155 overall pick by the 49ers in this year’s draft, should have a real shot at making an impact on the roster in his first season.
The only surefire starter at CB for the 49ers is Charvarius Ward. Free agent signee Isaiah Oliver figures to be the starting nickel CB. The side opposite Ward is more of a question mark though.
Deommodore Lenoir acquitted himself well last year and gave himself the inside track to a starting job, but it’s not a slam dunk that he starts on the outside. Luter with his size, length and athleticism could wind up pushing for that spot atop the depth chart. He also showed off good ball skills with 23 pass breakups and five interceptions.
However, if he doesn’t push for a starting job, he could have a lot of value as a reserve. San Francisco doesn’t have a ton of options behind Lenoir after Ambry Thomas’ rough second season. A more realistic projection for Luter likely pushes him into a reserve role where he battles with Thomas for a job as the top CB off the bench.
