Hello, Rickie Fowler!
The 34-year-old has resurrected his game this season, totaling 12 top-25 finishes in 17 starts, six of which were top 10s. And he’s brought his good form with him to California.
Fowler posted a first-round 8-under 62 around Los Angeles Country Club, the lowest round ever recorded at a U.S. Open (it was matched by Xander Schauffele 20 minutes later).
Starting with a birdie on No. 10, the 5-time PGA Tour winner then played holes 11-17 at 1 under before going on a tear. Fowler birdied Nos. 18-3 to get to 6 under on the day.
After a few pars, Fowler took advantage of the short par-4 sixth and added another circle to the card. Then, two holes later, he birdied the par-5 eighth after his tee shot found the woods right of the fairway.
A great two-putt at the par-3 ninth solidified his historic day.
His previous best finish at a U.S. Open was a tie for second in 2014 at Pinehurst.
Here are 12 photos from Fowler’s record-setting 62.
