Heisman Trophy: Final Thoughts On Who Will Win, How The Vote Will Go

Who’s going to win the 2020 Heisman Trophy? How will the vote go? Here are the Final Thoughts before tonight’s ceremony.

2020 Heisman Trophy Prediction

Again, with the caveat that this isn’t necessarily my ballot and I’m only predicting, not revealing, here’s what I think is going to happen and how this will go.

6. QB Ian Book, Notre Dame
The whole “game manager” thing and all of the disrespect stuff that Notre Dame made up for motivation was hoo-ha. Trust me; he’s very, very respected as a great college football player who got the Irish to two College Football Playoff appearances. He’ll get more No. 3 votes than you might think.

5. RB Najee Harris, Alabama
I was sort of stunned that he didn’t make the finalists list considering there’s almost always on running back who slips in. But if Jonathan Taylor wasn’t all that close over the last few years, Harris never really had a chance considering he didn’t flirt with 2,000 yards.

4. QB Trevor Lawrence, Clemson
He’ll make a slew of ballots for those who go with the Heisman as the award for the most talented player in college football. It all depends on what your idea of “best” is, and being the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft in a few months will show that. However, he missed the one big regular season game against Notre Dame game, and the stats aren’t that amazing compared to the other quarterbacks.

3. QB Kyle Trask, Florida
The LSU loss really hurt, and while he didn’t throw that many interceptions on the year, a few pick-sixes were enough to sting. This would’ve been over and he would’ve won in a walk if Florida pulled off the SEC Championship, but it’s not happening with the other options to choose from. He might have been on Joe Burrow’s touchdown and yardage pace before the bowls – and he did it against all SEC teams – but Burrow’s LSU team didn’t lose.

2. QB Mac Jones, Alabama
It’s TOTALLY unfair and absolutely wrong, but I get the general sense that too many voters think of him as just the guy who happens to be the quarterback for Alabama. And why? John Parker Wilson, Jacob Coker, Blake Sims, AJ McCarron, Greg McElroy – Bama won a ton with very good quarterbacks before Jalen Hurts and Tua Tagovailoa took things to a whole other level. All Jones did was have the most efficient passing season in the history of college football, but …

1. WR DeVonta Smith, Alabama
Again, I’m guessing and predicting here. Everyone likes to talk about the possibility of the Alabama guys splitting votes, but I think it’s going to be the quarterbacks who split them up and allow Smith to rise up and win it.

Smith will be No. 1 on enough ballots to matter, but he’ll probably be the one guy who’s in everyone’s top three. Meanwhile, those other two spots will be taken up by Trask, Jones and Lawrence in some way, but again, they’ll be split up enough to allow Smith to get the points to be named your 2020 Heisman Trophy winner.
