Gregg Popovich offers emphathy to Spurs after loss to Rockets: ‘I just feel badly’

After the San Antonio Spurs’ tough loss to the Houston Rockets, Gregg Popovich was empathetic of his team’s struggles.

When the San Antonio Spurs drafted Victor Wembanyama with the first pick in the 2023 NBA Draft this past summer, spirits were high. The team just landed a bonafide superstar and set themselves up for years of success. And at the start of the season, a 3-2 start had fans excited.

Unfortunately, things have gone downhill since then. San Antonio has now lost 17 games in a row, the second-worst losing streak in the NBA behind the Detroit Pistons’ 20-game streak. On Monday night, they dropped their game against the Houston Rockets by a score of 93-82, and their offense completely let them down.

After the game, head coach Gregg Popovich was empathetic, expressing how badly he feels that his team just can’t hit a shot right now.

“I just feel badly — it’s hard to know what to do when you’re missing that many shots,” Popovich said via ESPN. “It just makes it very, very difficult. But they’re growing in all kinds of ways and I just wish they could catch a break that way as far as making some shots.”

The Spurs shot 31-of-87 (35.6%) from the field and 5-of-41 (12.2%) from behind the three-point line against the Rockets, and Houston didn’t even have a great night, either. The Rockets shot just 32-98 (34.4%) from the floor and 12-of-39 (30.8%) from distance.

Unfortunately, the Spurs’ inability to score cost them, leading to their 17th-straight loss. Wembanyama’s presence is enough to keep fans interested, but that will only go so far. The team’s performance has been rough, and the losses just keep piling up.
