Grant Williams: ‘We’ve got to stay locked in’ vs. teams like the Philadelphia 76ers

“We were positive, we were just emphasizing discipline, emphasizing playing the right way, emphasizing getting stops,” said the Tennessee alum.

Boston Celtics reserve forward Grant Williams was interviewed by the media after the team’s 126-117 opening night victory over the Philadelphia 76ers at TD Garden on Tuesday. The former Tennessee standout spoke about surviving the Sixers’ runs to stay in the lead. He played a key role in those efforts thanks to the boost off the bench he provided at both ends.

“We were positive. We were just emphasizing discipline, emphasizing playing the right way, emphasizing getting stops,” said Williams of Boston’s poise under pressure that the Sixers could not match. “I think everybody here was super locked in for the game.”

Williams also spoke about the dust up between Sixers star Joel Embiid and veteran Boston guard Marcus Smart.

“I didn’t think the trip was that bad,” offered the former Vol. “I think that was a bit of a FIFA type of ordeal.”

“When it happened, Al (Horford) brought us in together and said ‘Don’t let this affect how we approach every single play, how we’re locked in. Stay locked in. … Let’s be ourselves, let’s be who we are.'”
