Grant Williams’ lack of floor time vs. Cavs Wednesday ‘just matchups,’ per coach Joe Mazzulla

‘When Mike (Muscala) was in, we were able to play a different defensive lineup,’ said Mazzulla.

Fans of the Boston Celtics likely noticed a conspicuous absence on the court in the team’s 117-113 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday night. Reserve forward Grant Williams did not take the court at any point of the game despite not being listed on the team’s injury report.

After the game, head coach Joe Mazzulla confirmed Williams was not out with injury, but rather “just matchups on the offensive end, as far as spacing the floor and having rim protection,” according to the Celtics coach. “So when Mike was in, we were able to play a different defensive lineup,” he explained.

“I didn’t want to switch these guys as much in that second unit,” Mazzulla explained. “So they played because of their sub pattern.”

The former Tennessee standout has been in something of a slump over his last 10 games, shooting just 32.7% from the field and 31.4% from 3 while putting up 6.1 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game.
