While we didn’t know who they would sign, the Tennessee Titans bringing in another safety in free agency was inevitable. Well, on Thursday, the inevitable finally happened.
The Titans have agreed to terms on a one-year deal with Jamal Adams, but the financial terms were not immediately disclosed. However, one would assume it’ll be a cheap deal considering all of Adams’ issues in recent years.
After becoming one of the best safeties in the NFL during his time with the New York Jets, Adams was traded to the Seattle Seahawks, where his career took a nosedive.
Adams dealt with plenty of injury issues, missing four games in 2020, five in 2021, 16 in 2022 and eight in 2023. On top of that, his play on the field declined, as he didn’t tally a single sack the past three years and posted career-worst coverage numbers twice (2020, 2023).
Normally you wouldn’t consider sacks an important stat for a safety, but that isn’t the case with Adams, who is at his best when playing in the box and blitzing, which makes him a good complement to Amani Hooker.
That style of play is also a great fit for defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson’s defense, which seeks to be aggressive, and certainly more so than the previous regime’s scheme. Wilson is also quite familiar with the veteran safety, who he coached during his days with the Jets.
There are no shortage of concerns with Adams and he certainly wasn’t our first choice for the Titans to sign (that was Justin Simmons).
However, he is a good fit for the Titans and has a coach who knows how to use him. Further, he gives Tennessee’s safeties group much-needed depth with Elijah Molden likely to get pushed to No. 3.
