The subject of Gonzaga and its possible move to the Pac-12 brings up a good and imporant reminder about realignment intrigue and rumors.
When we say that a school is talking with a conference, just how serious is it? Just how big a development is it?
Jon Wilner articulates the true importance of Gonzaga and the Pac-12 talking, as is the case with any school and any conference who gather around a table to discuss their futures:
“Of course, the Pac-12 has discussed membership with Gonzaga — and with San Diego State, too, for that matter.
“Everybody’s talking to everybody. The difference is that the Big 12’s meeting with Gonzaga was leaked to the media, while the Pac-12 has kept conversations private.
“We won’t offer a guess on Gonzaga’s ultimate destination — the Big East is also a possibility — and it’s entirely possible the Zags stay right where they are. There’s a strong case to be made that the WCC provides coach Mark Few with the best path to the national championship.”
Talk is just talk. If we learn that actual negotiations are occurring, that’s a different matter, and it represents an advancement in the seriousness of a pursuit.
Merely talking? As Wilner said, everyone does that … and everyone should.
If we learn that Gonzaga is negotiating a deal with a conference, then our ears will perk up. Until then, it’s just talk.
