Giants will not hire Ron Rivera, but they will face him twice a year

The New York Giants have yet to fire Pat Shurmur and are already missing out on replacements, including Ron Rivera who is headed to D.C.

The New York Giants had no shot at hiring former Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera on Black Monday. The Washington Redskins had wanted Rivera for weeks and now will reportedly hire him as their new head coach.

They moved quickly and decisively, boxing out the field of teams that are dragging their feet in the coaching carousel.

The Giants have not formally fired head coach Pat Shurmur, who has three years remaining on the five-year deal he signed before the 2018 season. The Redskins fired their head coach, Jay Gruden, after seven games and were operation under interim head coach Bill Callahan.

Rivera was fired by the Panthers on October 6 after the team got off to a 5-7 start. Former Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell took over on an interim basis.

The Giants will have to turn their focus elsewhere for a coach. It was not certain that Rivera was even on their radar. He had worked under Giants general manager Dave Gettleman for several seasons in Carolina but at the time of this report, Gettleman’s position with the Giants is also in question.
