New York Giants guard Will Hernandez was placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list on Thursday after his test came back positive. He is currently self-isolating at home.
“I haven’t spoken to him yet. Ronnie (Barnes) has been in contact with him,” head coach Joe Judge told reporters when asked if Hernandez was experiencing any symptoms.
Barring something unexpected and unforeseen, Hernandez will not be able to return to the team for at least five days and that’s a best case scenario. That means he will miss a Monday night game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, ending his consecutive games streak at 39.
In fact, it wouldn’t just break Hernandez’s 39-game streak, it would force him to miss the first snap of his entire NFL career.
Since joining the Giants as a second-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, Hernandez has been on the field for all 2,523 offensive snaps — a remarkable feat any way you slice it.
Following a positive test, if the player is asymptomatic, he can return once either a) 10 days have passed since the initial positive test; or b) five days have passed since the initial positive test and the player receives two consecutive negative PCR virus tests at least 24 hours apart within that five-day period.
It may be an unfortunate way for Hernandez’s multiple streaks to end, but that’s the nature of professional sports in 2020 amid a pandemic.
