Giants trade up, select a cornerback in Chad Reuter mock draft

In the latest mock draft from NFL Network’s Chad Reuter, the New York Giants trade up with the Ravens in order to select a cornerback.

As the New York Giants enter their second offseason under general manager Joe Schoen, the arrow is pointing up. But there are still plenty of needs that must be addressed over the coming months.

The Giants need depth at nearly every position but some are more glaring than others. The biggest gaps on their roster can be found at wide receiver, guard, center, inside linebacker, and cornerback.

In the latest mock draft from NFL Network’s Chad Reuter, the Giants address one of those needs in Round 1. However, it may not be the one you expect. And how they go about it may also come as a surprise.

Reuter projects that the Giants will trade up with the Baltimore Ravens and settle on Illinois cornerback Devon Witherspoon.

Pick 22: Devon Witherspoon, CB, Illinois

If the Giants find a receiver in free agency, I could see them jumping ahead of the Vikings to grab a corner like “Spoon” to fortify the secondary. He’s as competitive as they come, harassing receivers all day long, drawing flags and breaking up passes. New York trades the 25th overall selection and a third-rounder to Baltimore to move up three spots. (The Giants get a sixth-round pick, as well.)

In Round 2, Reuter has the Giants finally adding a wide receiver with Cincinnati’s Tyler Scott. Then, in Round 3, he has them landing Wisconsin center Joe Tippmann, which is a great value at No. 89 overall.

Reuter’s outlook is certainly a bit different than many other early mock drafts, but the Giants ultimately address three areas of need over their first three picks.
