The New York Giants added a few dynamic weapons to their sagging offense this offseason such as wide receivers Kenny Golladay, John Ross and rookie Kadarius Toney to go along with the existing group of Sterling Shepard, Darius Slayton, Saquon Barkley and Evan Engram.

Shepard is excited to get this new offense kicked off, especially playing with Golladay, who he called a big-bodied guy who can stretch the field.

“We need that,” Shepard said.

The Giants offense was ranked 31st in the NFL last year, averaging just 17.5 points per game. Only the Jets were worse.

“I’m super excited about the additions,” Shepard told reporters on Thursday during the team’s OTA session. “I can’t wait to see those guys get out there and get to running around. I got to run around with KG a little bit. The way he plucks the ball is something special. Can’t wait to get out there on Sundays with him, get going.”

Shepard will be doing so while wearing a new number — No. 3 — his uniform number from college. He made the switch from 87 to 3 after the league loosened up the rules on which positions can wear single digit jersey numbers.

“Something that means a lot to me,” he said. “It’s been a number that I’ve been since I was a little kid, after my father passed. He wore No. 3 in college. That’s something that meant a lot to me, a lot to his teammates. I wanted to carry that on.”

No. 3 has been worn by many players in the past here with the Giants, mainly by kickers such as Pete Gogolak.

“When I came into the league, you couldn’t get single digits. Whenever the rule changed, I was happy to grab that,” Shepard said.
