Giants select WR DeVonta Smith in latest CBS Sports mock draft

In the latest mock draft from CBS Sports, the New York Giants select Alabama WR DeVonta Smith at No. 11 overall.

Around and around we go, where we’ll stop…only the New York Giants when they’re on the clock at No. 11 overall come April’s draft know.

Mock drafts are coming fast and furious as we enter the dead portion of the NFL’s offseason and for the Giants, it’s many of the same names on repeat. After about a week of Kyle Pitts madness, most experts now appear to be circling back to the wide receiver position.

Alabama’s Jaylen Waddle is once again becoming a consensus, but there have been a few others sprinkled in. Such was the case in the latest CBS Sports mock draft, where the Giants selected Waddle’s teammate, DeVonta Smith, in Round 1.

The Giants have a lot of needs — edge rusher, cornerback, offensive lineman, tight end — but it’s hard to pass up on the best player in college football. Smith is an out-of-this-world talent whose only shortcoming is that he’s undersized. His slight frame didn’t limit his effectiveness during his Alabama career and he gives Daniel Jones an immediate downfield threat in New York.

The word “undersized” is significant even though there are some out there who would like to dismiss it. The reality is that while the Giants need talented playmakers, they already have a slew of undersized talent. What they’re lacking is the tall, physical, big-play threat that created matchup nightmares wherever he lines up.

That’s not a knock on Waddle or Smith, both of whom have bright futures, but a reality of the situation in East Rutherford.

Still, Smith is a remarkable talent and would be hard to pass on for any team. He’s clearly a top-10 talent capable of making most offenses better, but it would leave the Giants with a familiar remaining need.
