The New York Giants selected Georgia edge rusher Azeez Ojuari with the 50th overall pick in the second round of the 2021 NFL draft on Friday night in Cleveland. Here’s how Ojulari fits with Big Blue.
Ojulari (6-foot-2, 249 pounds), a redshirt sophomore, was solid at his pro day at Georgia, which the Giants naturally attended. He ran a 4.63 40-yard dash and logged in 26 bench presses. His character is impeccable and we all know how the Giants love Georgia players, so he’s a fit right off the bat. Plus, he has great length (34 1/2 inch arms).
How will they use him?
Ojulari can rush the passer (he had 9.5 sacks last year) but the Giants might use him as a strong side backer at first to leverage his excellent cover skills and finally kneecap tight ends who have killed this defense for decades.
But he’ll be used in a multitude of ways. The Giants will do what they always do — play situational football — and Ojulari will be Patrick Graham’s muse by taking on whatever task is asked of him.
What is most essential to his resume is the 12.5 tackles for a loss he had last season. The Giants want to attack the line of scrimmage and players such as Ojulari will go a long way in helping them do that.
