The NFL Draft is a little over two months away and with the NFL Combine set to commence next week, mock drafts are still, well, crap-shoots at best.
USA Today’s Doug Farrar’s latest pre-Combine mock has the New York Giants looking to bring in a huge offensive lineman with the fourth overall selection.
4. New York Giants (4-12): Mekhi Becton, OT, Louisville
Two sure things about Giants general manager Dave Gettleman: He loves him some “Hog Mollies,” and he doesn’t give a rat’s posterior what anybody thinks about his picks. So, were Gettleman to take Becton, a 6-foot-7, 369-pound mauler and eraser in the run game with high potential for his frame in his pass sets, don’t be surprised. Becton might not be from the “Build Your Ideal Left Tackle” factory in the modern NFL, but as Gettleman has made clear on multiple occasions, he’s not scouting and signing for the modern NFL, anyway.
I never say no to a road grader or a hog mollie with a high selection. Big bodies allow you to compete and Becton is a big body. The three players taken in front of the Giants also made this pick a little easier — QB Joe Burrow (Cincinnati), CB Jeff Okudah (Washington) and EDGE Chase Young (Detroit) — were all off the board.
What this mock doesn’t take into account are any trades that might be in the works. Cincinnati will likely keep their pick, but Washington and Detroit are open for business. If a team trading up for a quarterback bowls them over with an offer, they’ll gladly move back.
The same can’t be said for the Giants and Dave Gettleman who rarely trade back for more picks, which is one of the reasons why they’re in the predicament they’re in.
