Giants select Iowa OT Tristan Wirfs in latest Sports Illustrated mock draft

In the latest mock draft from Sports Illustrated, the New York Giants have a buffet to choose from, ultimately settling on Tristan Wirfs.

The NFL Draft is less than two weeks away and many of the decisions have been made when it comes to the first round. For the New York Giants, however, that may not be the case. With the No. 4 overall pick, they have many options and could still be exploring all of them at the moment.

One very popular option is to take the best player available to them, regardless of position, a strategy that usually works in most cases. In Sports Illustrated’s latest mock draft complied by Dr. Roto, the Giants go for need rather than value.

In this mock, the Giants will have a choice between a game-changing defender in either Clemson linebacker Isaiah Simmons, Auburn defensive lineman Derrick Brown or Ohio State cornerback Jeff Okudah or their choice of the top four offensive tackles on the board.

Dr. Roto has the Giants selecting Iowa offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs at No. 4.

Many Giants fans will want them to take Isaiah Simmons here, but GM Dave Gettleman knows that he has a huge investment in Daniel Jones and Saquon Barkley and Wirfs is the right choice to protect them.

Dr. Roto is right in both statements. The first three players selected were: LSU QB Joe Burrow (Bengals), Ohio State EDGE Chase Young (Redskins) and Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa (Miami via trade w/Detroit). The best two players remaining on the board were Okudah and Simmons. Since the Giants are flush with corners, the best player here for them would have been Simmons.

The choice of Wirfs makes sense because the Giants’ current starters at tackle are Nate Solder and either Nick Gates or Cam Fleming. Not inspiring. They’ve needed to address the tackle position for years and Wirfs is an athletic, versatile player who can elevate their line play.
