As the New York Giants begin to gear up for the 2020 regular season, many across the football world are readying themselves for the reemergence of running back Saquon Barkley.
Some, including Steve Mariucci, believe Barkley has a shot to win the NFL MVP Award, while Vegas oddsmarkers anticipate he will finish near the top of the league in rushing.
However, Pro Football Focus suggests we all pump those brakes.
While breaking down key fantasy football metrics for the upcoming season, PFF uncovered data that suggests Barkley will face one of the most difficult running back schedules in the league.
THREE BELL-COW BACKS HAVE TOUGH SCHEDULES THIS FALL
The Giants, Titans and Browns have the three hardest schedules for opposing running backs this fall, so buyer beware if you are considering Saquon Barkley, Derrick Henry or the combination of Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt.
Five of the Giants’ 16 2020 opponents (Philadelphia Eagles x2, Chicago Bears, Baltimore Ravens and Tampa Bay Buccaneers) all finished in the top 10 against the run a season ago, while three others (Dallas Cowboys x2 and Pittsburgh Steelers) finished in the top 15.
Of course, things change year-by-year and roster turnover will ultimately factor in. Additionally, the Giants have dramatically improved their offensive line and should be more creative in their play-calling under offensive coordinator Jason Garrett.
It is something worth watching, but if you happen to snag Barkley in your fantasy football draft, don’t even consider benching him for any of those games. More than likely, you’d come to regret it.
