Giants rookie Casey Schmitt had a hilarious reason for missing the call about his MLB promotion

Great excuse, honestly.

Whenever somebody asks Giants rookie infielder Casey Schmitt about where he was when he found out he was heading to the big leagues, he’ll always have a great story to tell. That’s for sure.

In fact, Schmitt sent the initial call to voicemail.

The 24-year-old shortstop from San Diego State had a night to remember on Tuesday in his MLB debut, hitting a 420-foot home run in his first Major League game and leading the Giants to a 4-1 win over the Nationals.

After the game, Schmitt — who had 60 friends and family members in the crowd from San Diego — was asked about that big-league call. And that’s when he admitted he missed the call at first. He was at the movie theater, watching Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

But credit to Schmitt because it sounded like he had some solid movie-theater etiquette there. He didn’t answer the phone in the middle of the movie, and when they called back a second time, he excused himself during the end credits to take the call. Plus, he can always catch up on those after-credit scenes here.
