It’s been quite a 13-month period for New York Giants wide receiver Kadarius Toney.
Toney was, of course, the player the Giants selected 20th overall in the 2021 NFL draft after moving back in the trade that landed the Chicago Bears Justin Fields and eventually placed Evan Neal in a Giants uniform.
As most know, Toney’s first NFL season had been filled with injuries and drama which of course drew comparisons to Odell Beckham Jr.
After Joe Schoen was brought in to be the next general manager of the Giants, he was quick to pinpoint Toney as the teams only untouchable player. That was until Toney was absent to voluntary minicamp and reports surfaced shortly thereafter that Toney was being shopped by Big Blue.
Schoen quickly denied any reports that the Giants were shopping Toney.
The former Florida Gator was not moved prior or during the draft and has remained with Big Blue. The potential for Toney to be a legitimate talent was never in question, however his attitude was certainly concerning.
Now that the dust has settled, head coach Brian Daboll has since come out and said Toney has been a pleasure to be around and now, Toney’s quarterback Daniel Jones is praising his wideout’s talent:
“Yeah, I think it’s huge to have him. I think in the times he was out there last year you saw what he can do, how special he can be with the ball in his hands,” Jones told reporters on Tuesday. “I think that adds a lot to our offense to have him out there. We need him. I think he’s done a great job in meetings, done a great job picking it up and learning this system. But, yeah, he can be a special player and we’ll certainly need him.
“I think that’s something we’ll work through when he’s out there. Something this offense does well is the ability to move guys around and put them in different spots. I think once he can gets on the field, we’ll be able to see that. Yeah, I think he gives us a special element.”
Clearly, Jones thinks Toney can be something special and with the entire wide receiver core traditionally having trouble staying on the field during their career, it will be important for Jones and Toney to develop a connection together.
