The Daniel Jones experiment for the New York Giants continues be on hold this week as the third-year pro will be sidelined again with a neck injury.
In Jones’ place will be journeyman Mike Glennon, who has proven the past few weeks that’s he’s a little more than just a placeholder.
In last week’s 37-21 loss to the Chargers in Los Angeles, Glennon became the ninth Giants quarterback since the 1970 NFL/AFL merger to throw two touchdown passes and rush for a score in the same game.
Most of that damage came in the fourth quarter after the Chargers had one foot on the bus but it’s still on tape and this week’s opponent, the Dallas Cowboys, will be gearing up for a more dynamic Glennon.
“I don’t know,” Glennon said when asked if the late scoring sure in L.A. gave the Cowboys something additional to prepare for. “First rushing touchdown of my career, which is I guess hard to believe, but it was good. Nonetheless, I always envisioned myself spiking the ball, but in that situation, I don’t think it really called for a spike.”
Glennon will be getting his third consecutive start this week and was asked if those late scores gave the offense any momentum.
“I think so. I think it’s just — I don’t know if you want to call it momentum, but it was good to end the game on a positive note and see no one quit. We had everyone on offense, and defense for that matter, but speaking for the offense though, we were obviously down a lot and could’ve just coasted to the next week, but everyone continued to fight for each other. It was good to finish a couple drives there with touchdowns at the end.”
That is one thing this Giants team refuses to do — quit. They play hard for all 60 minutes for Joe Judge. They’re likely to be put to that test again this week as they face the 9-4 Cowboys, who crushed them, 44-20, in Week 5 this season.
Glennon played extensively in that game after Jones left with a concussion. Some things have changed since then, however, and Glennon gave a quick rundown of the Dallas defense, which has kicked into high gear the past few weeks.
“They’re playing really well. They were playing well back then, but these past couple of weeks they’re leading the league in turnovers, might be up there in sacks. It’s really the same guys and then they also have DeMarcus Lawrence now, so it’s a really good, talented group across the board, great pass rushers. Obviously, with (Trevon) Diggs. They don’t have any weak links. Micah Parsons is playing as well as anybody in the league, so tough task that we’re looking forward to.”
Giants fans aren’t looking forward to it quite as much.
