New York Giants rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers had a stellar day in his second-ever NFL game.
In fact, after being targeted 18 times throughout the game, Nabers made history by becoming the youngest player in NFL history with 10+ receptions, 100+ receiving yards, and a touchdown.
Unfortunately, Nabers’ strong performance went to waste as the Giants ended up losing the game and falling to 0-2 at the hands of their division rivals.
To make matters worse, Nabers had a crucial drop on the Giants’ final offensive play of the game — a fourth down to turn the ball over on downs.
The Giants’ rookie was very hard on himself and visibly upset on the sidelines after the drop which carried over to his post-game interview.
“I’m disappointed. I mean, no matter how good of a game you can play, that last play came down to me. I’m just, I’m hurt that I let those veterans down,” Nabers told reporters. “I mean, they know what kind of player I am. Dex, Burns, Isaiah, I know what kind of confidence they got in me.
“So just letting those guys down. It’s just, I don’t want to never let my team down. That’s the main motto that’s in my head: Don’t let my team down. I let my team down.”
While many reacted to the loss on X by bashing head coach Brian Daboll over the mishandling of the kicker position, some were also quick to blame the loss on Nabers.
That, of course, is a bit ironic considering Nabers was one of the few reasons they had a chance to win to begin with.
While Nabers will have plenty of opportunities to redeem himself in the future, there’s no doubt this one will sting for a while.
