After a rocky start to his NFL career, New York Giants wide receiver Kadarius Toney has begun to take the league by storm. Every time he touches the football it’s a highlight, and his “twitchy” athleticism has caught the attention of even casual fans.
Even some of Toney’s teammates, who see him on a daily basis, still marvel at his skill.
“He’s electric with the ball. You get the ball in his hands and he’s going to make something special happen. We’ve got to continue to do that, and everybody else has got to play their part,” wide receiver Sterling Shepard told reporters on Wednesday.
“He’s twitchy, man. I was calling him a jitter bug. It’s hard because I remember whenever he caught the ball when I was in the game and I saw him make a couple miss, and I’m sitting there and I’m like, I need to be blocking somebody. He’s fun to watch, man.”
Toney’s jitter bug talent extends well beyond his ability to make people miss. The 22-year-old also has a heck of an arm — one strong enough to impress veteran quarterback Mike Glennon.
“He can do it all,” Glennon said. “I think he was like All-State as a quarterback in high school. I saw him in warm-ups in the preseason throwing the ball like 70 yards. He can spin it. I think it’s exciting to see him back there.”
Toney has yet to uncork a bomb during a game, but the Giants have allowed him to attempt a couple throws so far. He’s gone 0-for-1 with an impressive decision not to throw into double coverage.
Eventually, Toney will get the opportunity to push the ball downfield and it’ll be interesting to see how that plays out. Perhaps it will come this Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams when Shepard is back on the field and Glennon is likely under center.
