When Joe Schoen took over as general manager of the New York Giants, he knew there was a ton of work to be done in effort to build a more talented roster and get out of salary cap hell.
The Giants have already parted ways with a few players from the previous regime, including cornerback James Bradberry (cap causality) this past offseason and wide receiver Kadarius Toney in a trade just over a week ago.
Although there is plenty of work still to be done, the Giants do have some talent on the roster with a young nucleus to build around for the future.
Joe Schoen was recently a guest on NFL insider Peter Schrager’s podcast and talked about the players the Giants have to build around.
#Giants Schoen tells @PSchrags podcast his plans to keep inherited young talent: Thomas, Lawrence, McKinney, Love, Barkley, & Jones. "There's pieces in place … if they continue to perform at their level, you take care of your own. And then you add a couple draft classes …

“Yeah, we have nine picks going into next year. Financially, we’ll be in better shape and then the good thing with the roster is there’s some players that were here before I got here that are good young talents,” Schoen said. “You know: Andrew Thomas, Dexter Lawrence, Xavier McKinney, Julian Love, Saquon (Barkley), Daniel Jones. There are pieces in place that were here previously that hey, if they continue to perform at their level, you take care of your own.
“Then you add a couple draft classes and supplement some in free agency and again, start building it the right way bringing in our type of guys. I’m excited about the future. We had a plan in place, we’ve been able to execute it thus far. Again, financially we’ll be in much better shape this offseason and get some flexibility in free agency and then having nine picks gives you options there to continue to add young foundational pieces on top of the draft class that we have this year.”
The core of the players that Schoen mentioned as well as the 2022 draft class should be staples on the Giants roster for years to come.
