The debate surrounding New York Giants general manager Dave Gettleman has reached fever pitch ahead of the 2020 NFL Draft and a distinct line in the sand is being drawn.
On one side, there are those who buy into Gettleman’s remarkably impressive body of work. On the other side, there are those who believe he’s past his prime and needs to be brought out to pasture.
Gregg Rosenthal of Around the NFL falls into the latter category.
Rosenthal released his general manager power rankings earlier this week, weeding out anyone who is relatively new and hired after the 2018 NFL Draft, which left 25 GMs from around the league to be ranked. Gettleman checked in at No. 24 overall, which is a five-spot fall from where he was last ranked.
Gettleman’s fast start as Panthers GM appears farther and farther away in the rearview mirror. He’s entering Year 3 of his Giants reboot and sounded relieved to still have his job when I listened to him speak at the NFL Scouting Combine in February. Saquon Barkley and Daniel Jones’ success will validate Gettleman’s vision (or not), but the majority of this GM’s draft picks and cap space have gone to buttressing a beleaguered defense. Gettleman needs results from guys like Leonard Williams, or he may no longer continue to get chances to draft his hog mollies.
The only GM beaten out by Gettleman was Dave Caldwell of the Jacksonville Jaguars, who also saw a five-spot drop to No. 25 overall.
Unsurprisingly, New England Patriots general manager Bill Belichick — the former Giant — checked in at No. 1 overall.
