New York Giants general manager Dave Gettleman and the team’s director of college scouting, Chris Pettit, held a virtual press conference on Thursday to discuss the team’s draft process, strategy and possibilities.

One of those possibilities is a trade up — or back — from the No. 11 spot in next Thursday night’s first round.

Gettleman has traded up in his career but has never completed a trade back to gain more draft capital. He said it was not from a lack of trying.

“You guys don’t believe me, but I’ve tried [to trade back in the past]. I’m not getting fleeced; I refuse to do it,” Gettleman said. “If somebody wants to make a bad trade back, God bless them. It’s almost like an urban myth. I’ve tried.”

Gettleman went on to say that there were times he wanted to make a deal but by the time he and the other team agreed on the details, the player they were aiming for got drafted.

Gettleman was also asked about how the number of quarterbacks taken in the top 10 would impact the value of Giants’ selection at No. 11.

“The more quarterbacks that go, the more players it pushes to us. It obviously helps. I’d like to see 10 quarterbacks go ahead of us,” Gettleman said.

That isn’t possible, but as many as five quarterbacks are predicted to go in the top 10 selections.

The NFL.com’s draft tracker ranks just one quarterback — Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence — as a top-10 talent this year, so yes, there will be some blue-chippers at other positions falling to the Giants at No. 11.
