Giants’ Dave Gettleman ‘comfortable and confident’ in Daniel Jones

New York Giants GM Dave Gettleman says he’s “comfortable and confident” in second-year quarterback Daniel Jones.

The New York Giants are still “roster building” three years into general manager Dave Gettleman’s tenure but there are some positions he is consent with. Quarterback is one of them.

For 15 years, the Giants had no questions about who their quarterback of the future was since they had ironman Eli Manning. That tradition has continued with Daniel Jones, selected sixth overall in last year’s draft, who took over the reins from Manning in Week 3 of last season.

Jones tossed 24 touchdowns in his rookie year but was intercepted 12 times and lost 11 fumbles. Gettleman, in a video conference call with reporters on Wednesday, said he was confident that Jones will be able to take the Giants places.

“I’m comfortable and confident in Daniel Jones right now,” said Gettleman. “The only thing that was a little frustrating last year were the fumbles. He had a solid rookie year — did things no other rookie quarterback has ever done. And for some reason, I feel like the fumbles have overshadows all that stuff.

“He showed he can bring us from behind to win a game. He showed he can make big throws in an overtime period. This kid accomplished a lot last year.”

That is true. Jones was the first rookie quarterback in NFL history with two games of 300 or more passing yards and four or more touchdown passes. In fact, he actually had 3 of them.

“Daniel’s gonna be fine. He’s gonna be a fine NFL quarterback,” Gettleman added.

Jones has been working on his ball security this summer under new offensive coordinator Jason Garrett and quarterbacks coach Jerry Schuplinski, and although he’s had a few hiccups in camp, expectations are that he’ll improve in 2020.
