The New York Giants are still all-in on second-year quarterback Daniel Jones, even though it’s clear that he has cost them some ballgames this year.
Many draft pundits believe if the Giants have one of the top two selections in next year’s NFL Draft, however, they will draft over Jones and take a new quarterback.
The first two prospects in the draft are currently Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields, the quarterback at Ohio State. Luke Easterling of Draft Wire believes the Jets will select Lawrence at No. 1 and the Giants will take Fields with the second pick.
That might excite NFL and network executives but it does little for Giant fans. Fields is a fine player and has a wide range of skills but many don’t think the Giants should move off Jones just yet.
What would be the reason? Yes, Jones is error-prone, but so were Eli Manning and Phil Simms in their early years. And look at how they worked out.
It can’t be because Fields is more mobile, either. Jones is one of the best runners in the league at his position. Let’s also not forget the last OSU star quarterback (Dwayne Haskins) who was also rated a ‘can’t-miss’ prospect.
If the Giants do end up picking second, this might be the year to trade that pick for a package of players and picks to help build up their roster.
The fact is, though, the Giants are playing well enough to win themselves a few games this year. They are 1-7 and should be 3-5 or 4-4 right now. It is conceivable to think they can split their final four games and finish at 5-11, which would put them anywhere from the fifth to the seventh pick in the first round.
That would get them a player such as LSU wide receiver Ja’ Marr Chase, Miami EDGE Gregory Rousseau. Penn State LB Micah Parsons or Alabama CB Patrick Surtain II.
