The New York Giants introduced their new had coach, Brian Daboll, at a press conference on Monday morning. He was met by a gauntlet of various media outlets who peppered him with questions about his plans to turn the once proud flagship franchise around.
One subject that kept recurring among the inquiries were regarding quarterback Daniel Jones, who is heading into his fourth season and has yet to establish himself as a “franchise” quarterback.
Daboll is still getting to know Jones and says that he’s “looking forward to working him.” When asked how he planned to utilize Jones’ skills, it is going be a wait-and-see process as an offensive coaching staff still has to be hired.
“We’re going to try to implement a system that suits him and then it’s our job to bring pieces in that help him to be the best version of himself and the best quarterback for us,” Daboll said. “He’s got the right mindset. He’s got good size. There’s a lot of things to like about Daniel and we’ll just take it one day at a time. We’ll work with him. We’ll help him get better. We’ll help him be a better leader. We’ll help him be everything. That’s our job as a coaching staff and as an organization.”
The new coach said he asked Jones what he liked to do going back to his days at Duke. Daboll said the scheme will always be tailored around the talent, not the other way around, so players won’t be asked to do something that they can’t.
“One of the things that I asked him to do, and I said you can give it to me at any time. He was one of the players that called me after it was announced amongst some other guys and I said, ‘hey, give me some things that you really liked in your last three years or if you did it at Duke,’ and that’s where it’s going to start is some foundational pieces that he feels comfortable with,” Daboll said.
Daboll’s goal is to get Jones the tools he will need to succeed and shied away from comparing him to any other quarterbacks he’s coached, specifically Josh Allen.
“I wouldn’t do that to Daniel or really any other player, I think that’s unfair. I want to get to really know Daniel first and see what makes him tick and then we’ll take it one day at a time,” Daboll said. “I know he’s really willing, but to compare where Josh is or Daniel, I don’t think that’s fair to do to either one of those guys.”
It was notable that Daboll did not mention any other players by name in his presser, which may not bode well for many of them. When asked his thoughts on running back Saquon Barkley, he took the high road.
“He’s a talented player. We’ll try to use his skill set the best we can,” Daboll said.
Try. That is the operative word. Daboll knows the key to offensive success in the NFL is through the air with an army of receiving options and a backfield by committee. With Barkley headed into the final year of his rookie contract, this is certainly a make-or-break season for him.
