Giants’ Brian Daboll says Tommy DeVito will start vs. Eagles

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll says rookie Tommy DeVito will remain the team’s starter in Week 16 against the Philadelphia Eagles.

New York Giants rookie quarterback Tommy DeVito lost his magic on Sunday in a 24-6 loss against the New Orleans Saints.

Similar to his counterparts earlier this season, DeVito couldn’t get anything going in Week 15. He was sacked seven times, hit nine times, and endured a multitude of injuries along the way — he was checked for a concussion and hurt his ankle.

DeVito received no help from those around him as the offensive line reverted its Swiss cheese form, unable to so much as pick up a simple stunt, while the running game was nonexistent and his receivers were dropping passes left and right.

The game plan from offensive coordinator Mike Kafka was boring and generic, and nothing was properly executed. Add in the untimely penalties and it was the Daniel Jones treatment for DeVito.

“They played well. They stopped the run, were effective in the pass coverages. We had a couple of drops out there early that, I thought, could’ve helped us. Overall, (it was) not good enough,” head coach Brian Daboll said after the game.

Unlike last Monday night in a win against the Green Bay Packers, DeVito was unable to escape the pressure. It was coming from all angles and he simply had nowhere to run.

“I think that it’s different. There’s different rushes (each game),” Daboll said. “Every game is a little bit different. Like I said, not good enough all of the way around.”

Despite the ugly performance, Daboll said there will be no changes at quarterback. DeVito is slated to start against the Philadelphia Eagles on Christmas Day.

“Yep,” the coach said when asked if DeVito would start. “Yep.”

That, of course, is subject to change but shouldn’t. DeVito has earned the job for the remainder of the season and the Giants should ensure that he sees all the action he can — assuming he’s healthy enough to be out on the field.
