Giants’ Brian Daboll must bench Daniel Jones to save himself

In order to save himself, New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll must sacrifice public enemy No. 1, quarterback Daniel Jones.

The tides are turning in East Rutherford and the love affair with New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll appears to have reached its end.

During an impressive 2022 campaign, the first-year coach could do no wrong. Daboll was the toast of the town; cheered wherever he went from New York Rangers games to random encounters on the street.

Daboll coached the Giants to a winning record, a playoff appearance, their first postseason victory since Super Bowl XLVI, and wrapped things up with the AP Coach of the Year Award.

But that feels like a lifetime ago.

Fast forward to now and fans have begun to turn on Daboll. A disastrous 2023 season left them with a bad taste in their mouth and the optics only got worse this offseason due to the fallout with multiple coordinators and assistants.

Things reached a head on Sunday as the Giants fell flat against the Minnesota Vikings to open the 2024 season — all while Daboll called the plays.

His personnel decisions were highly suspect, his play-calling felt Joe Judge-like and his inaction on quarterback Daniel Jones has left fans wondering: Should Daboll actually be on the hot seat?

That question may have seemed preposterous just a month ago but it feels warranted now. And if Daboll has any designs of remaining in East Rutherford, he may have to pull the plug on public enemy No. 1.

No,” Daboll said after the game when asked if he considered benching Jones. “We’re going to watch everything. (A quarterback change) is not in my mind.”

The Giants and Jones are a sinking ship. There’s no way around that at the moment and while Daboll’s play-calling certainly didn’t help in any way, shape or form, he has no choice but to reset the clock. If he doesn’t, he’ll likely be shown the door alongside Jones at season’s end — if the pair even make it that far.

Drew Lock also isn’t the answer but the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over while expecting a different result. And right now, the Giants are acting insane.
